That Time Garth Brooks Called Me “Dan”
Throughout my media career, I’ve had the privilege of interacting with a number of notable people, from high-ranking politicians and celebrities to Army Generals and other VIPs. Among these encounters, one of the most memorable conversations I’ve ever had was with the legendary country singer, Garth Brooks.
This unforgettable moment occurred when I was on assignment as a photographer alongside a journalist who was set to interview Garth Brooks. As a huge fan of his music—”Callin’ Baton Rouge” is my favorite, by the way—I was thrilled about this opportunity.
The interview took place during Garth’s stadium tour a few years ago in Boise, Idaho. Our team was one of only a handful of media outlets granted an interview. We lined up in a row as Garth made his way from one camera tripod to the next, taking questions from journalists. I noticed that he made it a point to introduce himself to each photographer after the interview, a gesture that showcased his warm and personable nature.
When it was our turn, we conducted the interview, and at the end, Garth extended his hand to me and asked for my name. I replied, “Ben,” but he thought I said “Dan.” So he said, “Hi Dan.” In that moment, I chose not to correct him because, well, who corrects Garth Brooks? I thought to myself, “If only I could have a do-over, I would be more articulate and ensure he got my name right.”
As fate would have it, exactly one year later, I was invited to be the photographer for another interview with Garth Brooks in Salt Lake City. This time, I decided that if I had another chance to introduce myself, I wouldn’t say “Ben,” as it could easily be mistaken for “Dan.” Instead, I would say “Benjamin,” which would be clearer.
Just like the previous year, Garth went down the line introducing himself. When he got to me, he asked for my name, and I confidently said, “My name is Benjamin.” He responded, “Well, hi Benjamin,” and that was that.
Not only did Garth Brooks inadvertently teach me the valuable lesson of ensuring I articulate clearly when communicating, but this whole experience also taught me that you never know when you’ll be granted a second chance. In this case, I had my second chance to introduce myself to Garth Brooks—who would have thought that would happen?
Life is an interesting adventure, full of unexpected second chances. Embrace every opportunity and enjoy every step of the way.
